You've got a great set of technical qualifications, far better than most
newbies. Like Andrew says, go ahead and start looking for work NOW,
emphasizing your techie background when you apply.

If you've never written professionally, look into a community college
course in business writing (or actual tech writing if you can find it),
just to brush up on the little details of how to express yourself
accurately and consistently. Even though I grew up among writers, I found
that a one-semester "tune-up" was invaluable.

But don't wait. Look for job ads that your technical qualifications fit,
and do your learning on the job, while you take a writing course after
hours. Good luck.

Re the STC, I'd say go ahead and join. You'll learn some of the buzzwords
of our field, get exposed to some popular methodologies and books, and be
a part of an organization that does more good than harm. And membership in
an organization like that looks kinda cool on the resume. Sorry, Andrew. <g>

The STC is great. Or it's evil. I can never remember which.
