I understand there was an internal memo stating that some damage had
been done to the heat shield during takeoff, and that said damage could
cause problem. Still, if the crew of the Columbia had been told, what
could they have done? I understand that there's no other alternate
procedure for re-entry.

I'll give you a technical communication tie in. My company has a NASA
contract, so I am currently working at NASA, though not involved with
the
Shuttle. One of the most important parts of incidents is the procedures
that
have to be followed to lock down data and perform investigations. This
is
one area that might not be considered when thinking about technical
communication. These procedures are written hoping that they will never
be
necessary.

Thank you for acknowledging this tragedy. The NASA community all mourns
the
loss of our family members and wishes God's comfort on their loved ones.
