This is another one of those simple issues that many people are taking to an
absurd extreme.

If you don't want a credit check as part of a job interview, then say no thank
you and walk out the door. Nobody is holding a gun to your head and demanding
you take a job with a company that does credit checks.

That much said, a credit check isn't that unusual. You can't buy a cell phone,
car, or any major item without one. Why then an employer, who is taking a
bigger risk than a auto lender, not be allowed to do these checks. Hiring
somebody is a huge risk to a firm. Bad employees cost companies dearly.

Furthermore, chronic irresponsibility is something that would be obvious on a
credit check. And generally, people who are irresponsible with their money will
be irresponsible at work.

So, as always, this is real simple. If you have problems with having your
credit checked, then don't accept jobs at firms where credit checks are done.

One thing I do know is that a snotty, "I am above this kind of nonsense"
attitude won't win you one ounce of respect in a job interview. I know its fun
on this list to act like you're better than those lame HR twits, but attitude
says a lot about a person. There is a way to be friendly and
non-confrontational in a job interview. There are nice ways to so "no."
