Eh - just a few thoughts from me...

1. Everybody thinks they are a "quick learner."

In reality, very few people actually can learn things quickly. And its usually
because they have an extensive history of experience with the technologies in
question.

2. Portfolios can be misleading.

As often the case, the portfolio contains material where the job candidate was
only marginally involved. This is why it is important to quiz job candidates on
the technology. If they really wrote the whole thing, then they should
understand the technology.

3. Employment duration is not a good measure of capability.

People who sit in jobs for many years, usually sit there because its
comfortable and easy. They don't have to work very hard. (Momentum, remember).
Shifting into a new environment (new technologies) is likely to be very hard
for them as they bring a lot of baggage from their previous employer with them.
Likewise, people who jump around a lot can be flighty and glib. As such,
employment duration is not a good measure of capability.
