Hm...what's with all the engineers these days, I wonder? Time was, an
engineer sat in the locomotive of a train, pulling the whistle TOOT TOOT at
cows that got in the way. Then engineers were people who had gone to
college and majored in some kind of engineering discipline (electrical
engineering, chemical engineering, etc.). Now programmers are "software
engineers", people who pick up garbage are "sanitation engineers", technical
writers are "information engineers". Seems to me that anything that means
everything, also means nothing.

I'm voting with those who just stick with "writer", if that's what your main
responsibility is. Even better would be the old standard "technical
writer", so that new acquaintances won't be looking for your books next to A
Moveable Feast or Hamlet, your name on a by-line in the New York times, or
up in lights on a Broadway marquis.
