The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) has an
accreditation process which could serve as a model for
tech writers.

The APR is many things to many people: It's not a
barrier of entry into the field. Most corporate
executives probably don't give a darn about it. It's
highly respected within the public relations
profession. It requires an exam. It costs money. It
requires time in the industry. And accreditation says
nothing about the individual's subject matter
expertise of the industry in which he/she works (which
I think would be just as important to them as it is to
us).
