We took a trip to Egypt last fall. Egyptians are very friendly people and
are curious about foreigners. When I would tell them that I was a
technical writer, I too, would get blank stares. Then I would say that I
was a scribe, and they immediately got it. :-)

BTW, in ancient Egypt, scribes were very important people. The ability to
write was a magical thing.
