I start
the research process and find the following
information in a chemistry "book"(hard copy or online,
the source does not matter):

[...]

I decide that I want to use this paragraph (as
written)in my brochure. Is this information subject to
copyright laws or does this fall into the "Common
Knowledge" domain?

The information is not subject to copyright laws; copyright laws do not deal with information, no matter whether it is common knowledge or not. (There simply is no "common knowledge domain" in copyright law.)

The EXPRESSION of that information, however, IS subject to the copyright laws.

So, by lifting the entire paragraph, you'd be violating copyright laws - not because you repeat the information, but because you use another person's words to do so.

If you stated the same information in your own words, you'd be OK.

Hope this helps
Jan Henning
