hmm...must have used a different recipe for beer back then.

Sleek doesn't mean slender. Sleek means smooth and lustrous. Skin padded with fat is smoother and shinier than unpadded skin that shows the edges of all those nasty bones and tendons and things and may even be (horrors!) WRINKLED.
