However, I still don't understand
how people can attempt to discredit Andrew (and Eric!), and not feel
even the slightest bit hypocritical.

Where do you feel an attempt has been made to 'discredit'* Andrew? What John has said - as far as I understood him - is that he hosts a discussion in which he initially doesn't want people to participate who exhibit a certain kind of behavior. He alluded to Andrew as an example of someone with that kind of behavior. And he explained that this exclusion was made because that kind of behavior would threaten to prevent the discussion from reaching a useful conclusion.

So what he basically said was that he doesn't want unhelpful behavior in his discussion list, which is standard on moderated lists. Nowhere did he say or imply that this was a reflection on the worth of Andrew: His decision was purely for practical reasons and did not imply a judgement of Andrew's character.
