I don't know how it works in the US, but in Ontario, employees do owe
loyalty to their employers.

I'm not a lawyer, but my understanding is that that is one of the big
principles of employment law, based on the old Master and Servant Act (now
the Employers and Employees Act). [I don't have time to look it up now; I'm
working from memory.]
