Diane, you're my kind of people! I have a leather bound 3-ring portfolio that I've been using for many years now. My resume is in front (with extra copies) and the samples are organized by project type. I have those plastic sheet protectors which are nice because you can put a few extra copies of the sample to hand out (if they've been OK'd to be handed out of course).

I've had a portfolio ever since I graduated from college (11 years ago) and I see it as essential. And I have been on both sides of the interview table. If an artist came to me for a job and didn't have a portfolio, I would doubt their credibility. Like Diane said, most of the time, people just want to see that you have one. Rarely do they *really* look at the writing samples. But to me, it shows you're organized and professional, and it's a great way to showcase different types of projects you've worked on.

My $0.02,
Kathryn

I have a 2" wide, three-ring binder (the most attractive version I could
find at Office Depot), filled with top-opening, heavy-duty sheet protectors.
Project excerpts are printed and slid into the sheet protectors -- this
makes them easily removed if the client wishes to flip through one of them.
I have a printed label attached to each protector pocket, listing document
type, audience, and tools used.

Now, having said all of that, it has been my experience that the PRESENCE of
a portfolio is enough for most potential clients. Most do not even look at
the thing!
