Were I more competent or less arrogant or even more simian, I might
think so. But as I am none of those things, according to an
authoritative source, I'm of the opinion that it is part of a writer's
job to make determinations about such things. As has been said of
poets, but applies equally to ALL writers, "For a poet, there IS NO
choice of words."

The choices matter for the shades of meaning they convey.
