The fact that all are XML
does not mean that it is easier to share information amongst these XML
applications than it is to share between Word and FrameMaker. That's what
annoys me about the hype.

True (up to a point), and important to keep in mind: XML lets you define tagging languages; it is not, strictly speaking, a tagging language in itself.

However, with XML you have three potential advantages over proprietary formats such as Word and FrameMaker:

- The definition is completely open. This is not true for the standard binary FM and Word formats, although it is true for MIF and, I guess, RTF.

- The definition is extensible.

- There are tools that understand the principles of XML and can be adapted with little effort to your particular advantages.
