I've noticed, in myself, more and more of a tendency to do quick scans of
documentation on other people's desks, around printers, and even in garbage
cans for any hints of anything going on around me that may impact my
documentation.

Where else can you get requirement information whent the SMEs aren't available?

At some dot-coms, snooping around the fax or printers could give hints as to how long you have before you need to dust off your resume :)
