You have to select the row and go over the limits of the table in order to get the delete cells option.

No, you don't - it is enough just to select all the cells in the row.

That you have to perform this voodoo operation suggests that there is something going on with your table that you are unaware of. Perhaps there is a zero-width column or the table extends beyod the text column?
