If you interview with my company's CTO, he'll probably be wearing the same
thing.

I think the point about attire was that this was not a situation in which shorts and sandals were appropriate, and the candidates had not done their research to determine the attire of the company.

Even if I were going to talk with someone over coffee about being on their string of writers, I would pull myself together for that initial meeting. The shorts can (and will) come out after I'm hired. I always look a little (or a lot!) nicer for an interview than I do the rest of the time -- and I always try to find out the culture beforehand, so I don't show up in a formal ballgown to a Tevas-and-bikinis company, or vice versa.
