For maximum comic effect, I prefer "cursed" -- especially when pronounced as
two syllables, with a thick French accent, a la John Cleese.

Close enough. It's a response to a separatist Francophone blaming
everything on the English with the epithet of "Dammed English!"

PS: The east end of Montreal isn't really an area in which you want to be
getting into heated political debates on packed public transit.... :)
