Sure I'd know where to start:
1. Google
2. A good textbook at the appropriate level. Available from, (uhhh..).
bn.com, or maybe even on my own bookshelf.
4. Friends or colleagues who are experts in the subject matter.

Sure I'd know what questions to ask - that's one benefit of a broad (rather
than a specific) education. And, I would know how to filter and interpret
the stuff I found via research. My eyes would definitely not glaze over - I
would welcome the chance to learn about the new topics.

There's nothing wrong with doing this kind of research, in fact it's good
for you. One of my favorite things about being a tech writer is the
opportunity to work in many differnent fields, and acquire some knowledge of
each.
