I want to emphasize this response:
"Know your subject matter and get a grip on the pulse of whatever it is you
enjoy doing. Everything else will fall into place."

Subject matter is especially important as you move into higher paying jobs.
In Houston, for example, writers who specialize in the energy industry are a
separate bunch and have ample employment opportunities within that industry.
Knowing the industry and knowing the various products in the industry brings
you respect on the job and gives you a specialized networking nitch. You
can't be a creative top contributor to your product line without solid
knowledge of the industry.
