You're right. I used INCLUDETEXT a couple of years ago for a much simpler case with one variable and only a few differences between versions, where some of the variant text segments had to include screen shots and additional index entries.

It worked well, in spite of a few formatting "peculiarities" at the boundaries of the text in the included file. A little experimentation yielded satisfactory results, though.
