I thank all those who responded to my queries. The information I received was useful and will form the basis of my pitch to the powers that be in my company.

Unfortunately, developer documentation (such as high- and low-level design documents) is not in place for most products in my company. The interface developers begin their work late into release cycles. But, I now know how to tackle my problems.

BTW, Erika, Vlad Dracul is my pen name! But no, I'm not revealing my real name! ;-)
