No, she wasn't, contrary to some reports that she was driving at the time.
Not only was she not the driver, the car was not in motion, the driver
having pulled over so that she could open the lid. So if she hadn't had
the cup between her legs but had been holding it, any superheated coffee
that spilled or sloshed would have ended up burning her hands instead,
and if it had spilled onto her legs from above would still have burned
her there. To put things in perspective, the temperature the coffee was
held at in McDonald's urns (180-190 F) was the same as the coolant
that comes blasting out of your car's radiator if something springs a leak
when the car is at full running temp.
