I recently switched careers and have just finished my first contract (I have a couple more on the horizon.. maybe 2 weeks out).

In the meantime, I've been 'practicing' with different types of documents. One document I played with was a two page instruction sheet for a canoeing accessory that I purchased (the instructions that were provided were abysmal).

Anyway, I rewrote the instructions to match reality (a great improvement :-) . I just found out that the manufacturer (a) wrote the instructions in- house and (b) is going to rewrite them (it looks like there are other products requiring instruction rewrites also).

I want to approach them and offer to do the work for them. What is a 'reasonable' rate for this type of work? (small business, not a large number of copies of each instruction sheet need to be generated, I want to expand my repertoire and portfolio) Heck, I'd even be interested in trading the work for canoeing equipment :-)

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

John.
