Well, I've worked at places like that (just to reiterate, for those having trouble keeping track, places where the boss felt threatened and acted abusively), and finding a new job has always been a daunting task for me (mostly because people feel threatened around me). But I've found that standing up to the SOB generally works, and I end up with all the respect I deserve, not to mention the perks I want and the freedom to do my job as I see fit. So I'm with Goober, too.
