Andrew is right. Of course there are alternatives. The open-source
movement provides lots of them.

If you don't want to buy Word or Illustrator, use Open Office. If you
don't want to pay for PhotoShop, use the GIMP. Don't want to pay for
Acrobat? Then you can use Ghostview/Ghostscript.

I write about Windows products, and therefore I run Windows as my OS
here. But I don't use a single Microsoft tool in the process of writing
or illustrating the documentation.
