Are you talking about dongles (That's what we used to call them.) These were hardware devices that connected to the parallel port to validate your copy of AutoCAD or Quark or whatever. It was always tricky to get them to work together without crashing the system or slowing things down.

I'm wondering whether something like a smartcard or similar device might replace that. What's a better way??
