As for the Mac, its initial superiority in designing for four-color printing was that the operating system color model was from the beginning a four-color one.

Huh? That doesn't even make sense, David. Why would the Mac use a CMYK color model to power RGB and grayscale monitors? And if CMYK was part of the operating system, why is it found only in high-end applications? And why does every inkjet printer used with the Mac have to convert to CMYK from RGB?

No, the Mac's primary color model is RGB, the same as Windows. The Mac's superiority came from its early development of system-level ColorSync color profile technology, which provides standards for conversion between devices and color models. Windows was far behind in developing any kind of color matching.

But color profiles are a tricky thing. Though I'm on a Mac, I prefer to avoid color management through software. Instead, I've set my monitor to produce an average color rendition that approximates printed output -- on my monitor, that means contrast at 100%, brightness at 50%, and a color temperature of 7500K. It's good enough for the rough color work I do.
