Yes, the en dash is for ranges of numbers. And--
among sticklers-- for linking words that are in contrast
or opposition to one another (the Harvard[en]Yale game).

On some projects at least, I've joined the many who use
an en dash, with a space on either side, instead of an
em dash. The em dash with a full space on either side is
too darn long-- it's conspicuous on the page. But to use
thin spaces around the em dash is too much trouble. And
to use no space at all-- though it's exactly what some
reputable publishers do-- seems illogical to me because
the em dash isn't there to link words together, it's there
to create a gulf between them.

(To those who find punctuational style irrelevant to what real
technical writers should be thinking about... greetings and how
come you read this far?)
