Sean,

It depends on what you are using the semicolon for. Sometimes the semicolon separates independent clauses (your case), either to replace an omitted _and_ or because the clauses have internal punctuation; sometimes it separates list elements that have internal punctuation; sometimes it's a marker in code; and sometimes it separates a bunch of "whereas" clauses or the like, which are dependent, not independent.
