Mike: It is not a myth, it is fact. There are lots of companies where it is very difficult to get rid of someone before the end of the 90 day probationary period, and even more difficult afterward. I have seen it take as long as 40 days to fire someone after the decision was made during the new hire's first week. Regardless of the reasons for this type of decision-making, the hiring manager gets the flak for hiring "the wrong person" and wasting thousands of company dollars. I agree that this can be stramlined, but in today's society, every possible precaution is taken to make sure the decision to fire is not 'arbitrary' in any sense of the word.
Document, document, document; is our mantra.

Mike O. wrote>>>>>>I don't believe this great myth about how much it costs to hire the wrong person. All the articles about how much it costs seem to be sponsored by recruiting firms. If it ends up costing more than two weeks pay, then the employer is to blame for allowing a bad situation to continue.

Employers aren't shy about firing people these days. If the employee is not performing, then it's the employer's responsibility to notice it and take action. Or if they somehow manage to damage a client relationship, ask yourself why you allowed a new probationary employee to have access to the client.<<<<<
