I believe that any blind adherence to an approach
(scientific or otherwise) stems from the basic insecurity
many have with defending their own thoughts and beliefs.
Being unwilling (or incapable) to research and understand
the issues, they latch onto something convenient and/or
familiar. Challenging that belief then becomes an attack
on their own credibility as they cannot defend the ideas
with their own thoughts.
I don't think aesthetics necessarily come into the
equation. It apples to any of the religious type wars over
grammar, tools, OS's, rules, styles, etc.
