Have you tried using Ctrl + Y to repeat the last thing you did? I use that
keyboard shortcut in Word, Excel, and (I thought) Powerpoint. Never used F4.
Ctrl+Y is the Redo command (opposite of Ctrl+Z, Undo). I just tested it and found that it indeed repeats your last action after you don't have any more Redo steps to do, but it has the same problem as F4. When you page down, Ctrl+Y obligingly repeats the page down. If you manually scroll down, though, it repeats the last thing you did.
I find the Format Painter safer (the paintbrush button). If you double-click the button, the painter stays selected and you can navigate anywhere in the presentation and apply formatting to text by dragging the cursor over the text, to a word just by clicking the cursor in the word, or to a whole placeholder (if you had one selected when you clicked the button), by clicking anywhere within the scope of the placeholder. This works for graphic formats, as well. The Esc key deselects the Format Painter.
