Ideally documents should be proofread by someone else at least once. The
number of glaring mistakes that have been caught by another person when
I could have sworn blind it was OK... Of course that isn't always
possible, and there are ways to improve your hit rate. If proofing for
spelling/punctuation only, then try reading the document backwards. It
helps break the pattern recognition in the brain and forces you to look
at it in a new light. Using a ruler to separate lines helps too. Leaving
the doc for a few days and then returning to it fresh is also helpful.
