I see your point. And you add more work to yourself, if you have to
proofread documents that the production team's too busy to proofread. So by
the time you get the final documents, you might have a real editing mess on
your hands :-}

Here's my suggestion:

Talk to your manager about providing a little coaching to the production
team. Give them the BASICS about proofreading and editing. That way, they
can proofread their revisions, and you can then proofread the final version.
That's what my company recently did with a team of technical-support
specialists. They are responsible for writing solutions to customer issues,
following a VERY basic style guide I wrote for them. Once they have a FINAL
version of this solution, there is a team set aside to do nothing but
proofread and edit the solution, before it is published to the world.

I think this might help your dilemma. On the one hand, you do really need to
be the person to proofread the documentation. On the other hand, you don't
have time to proofread and edit every revision. Perhaps the above can create
a happy medium :-}
