And even better, use character formats named UserInput, ApplicationOutput, CodeExample, DialogName etc. so that as a writer you concentrate on the technical information and classification. Then the template/design can accommodate the metadata as appropriate.

We're doing XHTML, so:

- interface names : <samp />
- data of any kind : <code />

We never use <b />, or at least we're not supposed to and we rarely use <i />. So truthfully, those two tags cover all of our needs.
