Because XML allows us to do this without storing documentation in a proprietary WYSIWYG format (transform in, transform out)?

Because not all writers are up to speed on XML and possibly don't want to be, yet need to be able to produce XML source?

Because it's what we're most comfortable using (generally) out of habit?

Because cool-looking WYSIWYG editors attract buyers?
