Chris,
Take a good look at www.techwr-l.com (you'll be redirected) and see
what's at stake here. It's more than just a mailing list. There's a
ton of intellectual property there, as well as ad space and other
stuff.
If someone wants to control all that, more power to them. 99.9% of my
techwr-l time is spent in e-mail, and if that's all that remains, I
won't be too bummed.
But there is definitely a lot of good stuff on the site.
