Hi- I recently ran across a rather interesting
problem when working on a medium sized document in
Word (100 pages, plus 50 to 60 graphics- pictures,
graphs and charts, and 3 clip art).
I was receiving edits from the specialists on content
and was using tracked changes for the supervisor's
approval (which I only mention because this is when
the problem apparently arose, or is at least when I
realized there was a problem), and on the very last
page of the document I encountered a text box. I had
not used text boxes in the document, so was surprised,
but figured I would just delete it and that would be
the end of it.

Kate,

You have encountered merely the second circle of Word Hell, not the ninth. There is a way out. Try these two techniques, in order.

1. Review and accept or reject all tracked changes. You can do this en masse if you are ready to; otherwise, take the time to do it now. When you are done, turn off Track Changes, resave the document, and then try deleting the text boxes. All sorts of mysterious things happen after Track Changes has been on for a while, especially if you have the changes hidden on screen for some users.

2. If that doesn't work, "Maggie" the document. This is techwr-l shorthand for selecting the entire document (Ctrl+A), then pressing the left arrow key once so that you deselect the final paragraph mark, then copying to the clipboard, opening a new, blank document, and pasting. You will lose some information, such as headers and footers, and you will have to reapply your template. But this often clears up corruption problems. If your document consists of multiple sections, you might need to use this technique one section at a time.

If neither of those techniques solves the problem, write back and someone else may have a more specific suggestion.

Dick
