Many years ago, Prime Computer (remember them?) gave authors a byline on
certain highly visible manuals. The idea, IIRC, was to motivate people to to
a better job by making them personally and publicly accountable for their
work.

Fast forward a decade or two. Another late, lamented (but smaller) company
used a colophon at the end of the manuals to credit writers, developers,
artists, and the ever popular "guy who brought the midnight pizza."

IME, very few companies now give a credit line. BUT writers seem to be able
to work their names or the name of their companies into examples and other
places, like the Apple Easter Eggs or hidden in the HTML comments.

Personally, I don't like the idea of being too visible. If your name is in
there, SOMEONE with an obscure question will find you, three years after
you've forgotten all you ever know about the product, and hound you for an
answer. Been there!
