The real question here is why something as simple as shin guards even
requires an instruction manual?!

Just bought my son a new pair of shin guards. The instruction manual came in
24 languages, including separate (but nearly identical) instructions in
British and American English. There was also a separate quick-start card in
5 languages.

Both the British and the American instructions specified temperatures in
Celsius, and there were no "colour" or "organisation" words that would have
required alternate spellings. The only differences were:
* The numbered lists for the UK were bulleted lists for the US.
* Both sets of instructions had the same cautions, but the American
version preceded them with the header: "Warnings."
* "Shinguard" is one word in the UK and two words in the US.
* The American instructions included an annoying introduction:
"Thank you for choosing... You have made an excellent choice..., etc."
