I recently joined Mensa and I'd been wondering
whether to mention it on my resume.
As for my own experience hiring, one thing that
candidates see as positive and I see differently
is a proud display of recently acquired knowledge
regarding my company and its products. I want to
say, "Fella, no matter whether or not you spent
an hour reading our website, you are going to
come in here so ignorant, and need so many hours
of training, that it makes no difference to me
Another tactic that arouses my disdain is the
obviously custom-tailored career goal-- you know,
like "Objective: To perform technical writing at
a medium-sized UNIX and legacy-OS based consulting
company in a grey building on Main Street."
And then there are the applicants who, in order
to show how highly qualified they are, immediately
start talking about how eligible they are to advance
out of the job that you're trying to fill. Or who
volunteer trenchant criticisms of the work that
your department is putting out.
Oh, and follow-ups. I've heard that it's recommended
to phone and remind the company of your application in
order to maintain their high awareness of you. To me
when I'm hiring, it's just an irritation. You have no
news, I obviously have no news or else I would contact
you, so why bother me with a phone call?
Maybe this makes me an exception...
