Well, what I've done with, for example, release notes, is to keep one
document with a generic name that I continue to edit going forward. When I'm
ready to "release", the pdf gets generated with the name
<prodname>ReleaseNotes<version/build>.pdf -- and yes, that means the link on
the intranet/Internet needs to be updated, but all of the customer-facing
advantages exist, as does the ability to support multiple versions. When the
doc gets checked in to version control, the release and build numbers are in
the check-in comments, but it's a single document. You could also use this
scheme and save off a "release" version with the version number in the name
in an archive directory if you don't use version control.

Including version numbers in file names my be reasonable even if I use
version control. If more than one version of the product are (is?) used by
my customers, including version numbers in the file names will help to
avoid confusion both at the customer and at my company's support team.
