Hi- I haven't gotten all the way through this thread,
so I don't know if anyone mentioned it... but one
reason to stick with 12pt over 10pt is the American
Disabilities Act. They recommend nothing smaller then
12pt. for those with sight problems.

As for the Times New Roman- the phrase "over used"
comes to mind. I've always been fond of Verdana Ref
myself... much easier on the eyes.
