Many years ago, I worked a low-paying editorial job and was told indirectly that I was getting paid plenty for a single female to live on. (Did I miss out on some discount that retailers, utilities, and such gave to unmarried women without children???) I kept the job for a while to gain work experience because I was still too unsure of myself and my skills to move on.

At the same time, a guy at the company was promoted to a newly created position and reportedly given a large raise. The reason that was given for his promotion? He had six kids to support, so he needed a higher income, and the company was happy to accommodate him.

What a deal for him...
