I also have never had luck with search bars, as a
user, within websites and prefer a well organized
navigational structure. But to answer your original
question- The organization I work for uses one from
Thunderstone called Webinator, which I prefer to
Google (no offense to Googler's). there isn't much,
if any, difference between the two other then the
results I get. I never seem to have any luck with
Google... I searched for myself once and found out I
am a town in Germany (there's one for the resume).
When we were looking at possibly changing I spent a
few hours looking at other search bars and my advice
would be, if you have time (which I know we all have
in such abundance), to check out a couple of websites
that you know have search functions and see what they
use and how well it works for you. This will give you
a chance to see how the search function will work in a
real setting and if it gives you the types of results
you want and/or expect.
