As in so many cases, it depends.

At my company, we use the Chicago Manual of Style. CMS has for some years argued for the trend towards fewer hyphenations--notwithstanding a lengthy section on hyphenation. This makes a lot of sense (my favorite examples of words better written as closed rather than hyphenated are online and database). But CMS is not absolutist on the topic. I don't know any style manual (NYT, APA, CBE, etc.) that is absolutist. It's always a matter of case by case--and check the dictionary when in doubt.

Kathy, the question wasn't on whether to use more or fewer grammatical hyphens. Like you, I go with CMS; but conventions are subject to evolution.

The question was about the hyphens used to break a word at the end of a typeset line.
