Hi Jess

Testing is a specialised area of the project and usually left up to the
software development team.

Tech writers often test and report errors to the development team as part
of their research. I have never been asked to do dedicated testing when
hired to do technical writing, but I suppose it is possible.

regards
Suzy

Hi Suzy:

Thanks for the helpful information. Can a tech writer be called upon to
do software testing? I have done some beta testing in the past. Yes it
is an IT contracting role.

Regards,

Jess

Hi Jess

I assume this is an IT contracting role, and if so, they are referring
to
the Software Development Life Cycle. If not IT, could be product
development life cycle.

Which is usually, in brief (and I'm sure glad that if I've forgotten
something someone will set it right!):

1. Write Proposal/Repond to RFI/RFP (win business)
2. Define requirements
3. Design architecture
4. Develop software and start user documentation
5. Test software and user documentation
6. Finalise software and documentation
7. Deploy
8. Provide ongoing system maintenance/support

A technical writer could be required at any of these stages depending on
the documentation system or user.

regards
Suzy
