Another thing to consider is simply the availability of openings. Looking
at TECHWR-L's own employment page, I note that in 50 categories there are
only 29 job openings listed. STC's job board lists 110 opening for the
past 10 days (but that's also everywhere in the world).

Though I would like to see more recruiters and companies looking for
people, the facts seem to be that more companies are passing tech writing
tasks on to the technical folks--the network administrator who many years
ago majored in English ;) but who has a solid track record in hands-on
administration of a network. Companies are taking a Microsoft approach:
"Good enough is good enough" when it comes to tech writing. I see _this_
as a trend.
