Some shyness is learned or is cultural (are those different?). In my own experience, my youngest years
were while my father was away at sea, and much of my
care came from a maiden aunt whose values included the
idea that good people's names never appeared in the
newspaper except at birth, marriage, and death. There
were lots of things that we as a family (or mostly my
aunt, I guess) simply Didn't Do. OTHER people might
go the the movies (moving pictures they were, then, called
"moo'm pitchas" in our local dialect), but the theatre
was too filthy for US! Other people might speak up if
offended, but we suffered in silence. Only morally
reprehensible people ate garlic or gambled; or spoke
loudly or out of turn.

I overcame a lot of this stuff, and now speak both loudly
and out of turn, and I probably eat too much garlic. I've
found plenty of ways to lose money without gambling, though.
